How to eat well on road trips

How to eat well on road trips

Is a road trip in your future? Before you pack up the car for an adventure, put some thought into how you and the crew will handle your hunger. With some pre-planning and these simple tips, you can eat affordably — and deliciously — during the trip.

Easy to eat

Think about finger-foods you can eat with one hand that won't make too much of a mess.

  • Whole fruit like apples or peaches
  • Cubed watermelon or mango
  • Veggie sticks
  • Cheese sticks or slices
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Beef jerky
  • Protein bars

Easy to share

If you make a pit stop for a snack session, share these with your group:

  • Sandwiches — make a bunch, cut them in half for easy grabbing.
  • Peanut butter, sunflower butter, hummus — bring a tub as a dip for pretzels or those veggie sticks.
  • Nuts and seeds — buy in bulk to save money and portion into individual bags or containers.

Easy to store

You'll need a way to keep all of the above cold so it stays fresh. Pack cold packs or bags of ice cubes with your food in a cooler.

Also, water is essential to staying hydrated, so leave some cooler space for a refillable water bottle.
